The latest technical project case study for architects, from our stunning Chelsea development

Bloomfield Terrace, Chelsea

This beautiful renovation project recently completed in Sloane Square, Chelsea where our client engaged us to source and install a premium glazing package at ground and basement level.

The Brief

We were approached by Clive Sall Architecture to design, supply, install an ultra slim aluminium solution across 3 floors in a Townhouse refurbishment project in Chelsea, London. This property is a seven bedroom townhouse in central Chelsea that went through a complete restructure and refurbishment, completed in March 2022.

Daylight met with Clive Sall Architecture to discuss their specific needs and initially discussed several options with them. Their brief was to maximise natural daylight into a two floor basement featuring a cinema, gymnasium, kitchen and living area. Once we understood what the Architect wanted and how they would use each space in the property, we were able to develop initial proposals.

Meeting the Client’s Vision

We worked with Schuco, Smarts, ALUK, Origin and Cortizo to design five different options and then met for a second time to present these and make our recommendations. Meeting with the both Clive Sall and Build IT, Daylight presented our proposals and recommendations based on the client brief, their vision and what we believed would best meet that brief.

Daylight presented five options based on design, suitability and function.

The key deliverables were maximising light and minimising sightlines. As part of our design discovery, we developed a concept with Cortizo for a “Daylight tunnel”, delivering natural light to both basement levels that would enable the homeowner to feel as if they were on the ground floor.

We chose Cortizo as it is a leading European manufacturer, and one of the most progressive aluminium system companies there in the market. Cortizo enabled us to deliver a design beyond client expectations and within budget.

Visualisation

For visualisation, we drafted 3D drawings so that Clive Sall Architecture and their private client could visualise our solution.

The Delivery

Our in-house surveyors and technical team worked with the Clive Sall Architecture, Build IT and Rose Hall to ensure that all systems and profile designs delivered on the desired outcome.

Our in-house team supplied CAD and DWG drawings so the exact design calculations could be included in the final designs and that openings and levels were built to precise measurements. The client wanted to achieve maximum natural Daylight, minimal frame sight lines and recessed thresholds throughout.

When the site was ready for survey, our surveyors measured all openings and made final adjustments to ensure that the sight lines and levels met all requirements before manufacturing commenced. The install, also managed by Daylight, was completed in December 2021.

Mid-Project Quality Checks

Multiple site visits were observed throughout the project to ensure the specification was being hit.
