Project Strawberry Hill

A Beacon of Design and Sustainability

In the picturesque Hampshire countryside, the latest project, Strawberry Hill, has been unveiled, representing a significant refurbishment that transforms the essence of residential architecture. This ambitious endeavour was undertaken to fulfil a client's dream of reviving their home with a blend of modern comforts and a deep appreciation for the surrounding natural beauty.

After relocating from Hong Kong, where they spent more than three decades, the client chose the tranquil British countryside as their sanctuary. OB Architecture, brought to the project a unique blend of creativity and contemporary innovation, ensuring the residence meets the demands of 21st-century living while maintaining a heartfelt connection to the Hampshire countryside.

The Centrepiece

The transformation's centrepiece is a stunning circular GluLam timber structure, a collaborative creation with Buckland Timber, which stands in place of an outdated steel-framed conservatory from the 80s. This change was not just aesthetic but functional, addressing the need for modern thermal efficiency and comfort without sacrificing the home's original charm. The new structure offers 270-degree views of the meticulously landscaped garden, tennis court, and the idyllic countryside, establishing a harmonious link between the home and its natural surroundings.

Natural Light with Innovative Systems

The introduction of Daylight’s bespoke roof system, complete with integral drainage and Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs), was pivotal. This innovative system ensured that natural light was harnessed to its fullest, significantly enhancing the daylight factor within the home, thus cutting down the reliance on artificial lighting and boosting energy efficiency.

The Redesign

The redesign extended beyond the structural innovations, touching every aspect of the home to create a coherent and modern living space. This includes a refreshed entrance leading to an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area, and extending to the newly added garden room. The lower ground floor saw the introduction of a modernised spa and pool area, enhanced by expansive plate windows that frame the stunning views and invite natural light deep into the heart of the home.

Natural Light with Innovative Systems

OB Architecture's commitment to eco-conscious design is evident in the choice of materials and the incorporation of sustainable features, such as the GluLam timber frame for its environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. Automated roof lights were installed to promote passive ventilation, further reducing the home's energy needs. Strawberry Hill stands as a testament to the synergy between innovative design and sustainability. It not only offers a blueprint for modern rural living but also showcases how architecture can enhance our relationship with the natural world.
